For the second time in a row, Alvaro Subiabre Sotomayor, director of the Choir of the Universidad de Los Lagos, was presented to participate in the international project “Iberoamerica se canta en Coro”, which brings together directors-composers from 12 countries, 46 artists and 81 musical works with fundamental pieces of Ibero-American folklore. The activity is organized by the the CoralCun Arte Vocal Foundation of Mexico.

The meeting was held through the Zoom platform from Cancun and the objective of the activity is the rescue and dissemination of the music of heritage and folkloric works of each participating country. Unlike the previous book (Download Link Previous Book), this year 3 categories were added which are Children’s Choir with 17 arrangements; Mixed Choir with 46 arrangements and Choirs of Equal Voices, with 15 female and 3 males.

An important detail that addresses the next edition of Iberoamérica se Canta en Coro, is that it will have the participation of directors-composers who made musical pieces of works in native languages of the native peoples of America.

Professor Alvaro Subiabre, will present two works with their own arrangements, of which the theme of Víctor Jara stands out, “The right to live in peace” recorded in virtuality recently by the ULagos Choir and the theme “Caracol Agustín” by Verónica Prieto, theme that was recorded by the Mayahuel Women’s Choir of the city of Guadalajara Mexico under the direction of Wilmia Verrier of Cuba and by the Choir of the San Miguel de Calbuco School, directed by the Professor of Pedagogy in Arts mention Music of the ULagos, Camila Montecinos.

Subiabre, along with greeting those present, pointed out that “with this second experience of being in this project as important as creating choral arrangements to nourish the choirs and music directors of our continent is a very enriching trip, in this way you will access to know the heritage, folkloric music, the popular themes of each country, of which many works have never had a choral version. One of the most fundamental factors is to expand, generate more diffusion with the idea that more countries of the continent are integrated. Now there is no pretext, We have edited material and it will be available to download the book for free and know a large number of works from all the countries of Ibero-America, “said the arranger.

The director of the ULagos Choir of the Puerto Montt Campus, Alvaro Subiabre, stressed the importance, for our university, of being the only representative of the country to be in this type of contest. “For us as a career of Pedagogy in Musical Arts, it is very important to relieve the fact that we are the only house of studies in Chile where one of its academics participates in such an important contest that generates so much stir internationally. Choral music is increasingly in tune with people and in times of pandemic it has been fundamental so that people can enjoy and listen to popular songs from all over Latin America through technology,” closed the teacher.

Camila Montecinos, music teacher of ULagos, coordinator of the Department of Musical Arts of the San Miguel de Calbuco school detailed the invitation to participate. “This year Professor Subiabre, presented me with the challenge of being able to record his choral arrangement of the song “Caracol Agustín”, with the school choir, I already had the experience of working in a virtual format. I presented them to the school management who unanimously supported this initiative, where the children participated enthusiastically and responsibly in this Ibero-American project, think that they will perform together with the choir of Guadalajara of Mexico”.

Montecinos added that the participation of the school choir has a double function in that it generates self-esteem in children and a sense of belonging. “For them it’s something so meaningful, that they feel important. So it is very relevant that singing is part of the daily life of children That they learn through singing to improve their self-esteem, to improve their sense of responsibility, that they generate a sense of belonging to their school and their community, not because they are on a small island they will have less opportunity than the children of a city or capital. ” The ULagos music teacher concluded emphatically.
