Rector ULagos president of the IOHE presents in intersectoral workshop on the skills of the future

Organization of American States (OAS) together with the Ministries of Education and Labor coordinated the event with prominent exponents from Chile and abroad.

The Organization of American States (OAS) together with the Ministry of Education (Mineduc) and the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare held an intersectoral workshop called “The skills of the future”, an initiative that involved different educational, productive sectors, the public and private world of work around the commitment to identify and develop the skills of the future, both socio-emotional and technical.

One of the presenters at this two-day event held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile, was the rector of the University of Los Lagos and president of the Inter-American University Organization (IOHE) Óscar Garrido Álvarez, who participated in panel 4 “Approaches and responses from academia to training in the skills of the future”, together with a representative of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), at the CEDUC UCN Technical Training Center, moderated by the rector of the University Department Obrero Campesino DUOC (Universidad Católica de Chile), Ricardo Paredes.

Among the topics addressed in the intersectoral workshop as relevant was the involvement of the productive sector in training strategies, achieving conditions that facilitate lifelong learning, creating and strengthening national qualification frameworks and, in general, bringing the world of education and the world of work that is essential to take advantage of opportunities and face the challenges of accelerated technological change and, with this, to forge a better future for our region.

The OAS expressed its commitment to remain committed to working with each and every one of the attendees of this event, with their governments and organizations, making maximum efforts to improve education-work coordination.

Soon the document of lessons learned and recommendations that seek to continue with this coordinated work regarding the challenges that lie ahead, a document in which the moderators of the 5 panels and the members of each group are working. 

The objectives of this meeting were: To achieve a greater understanding of the challenges that accelerated technological change and the transformation of the world of work are generating in education and training systems.

Discuss trends and methodologies for the development of future skills (technical and socio-emotional), taking into account concrete experiences within education and training systems for work.

Analyze experiences of joint work and/or coordination between Ministries of Labor and Education, as well as with other public and private actors, in the identification and development of skills of the future.
