  • The group realized their regular meeting of start of the year, this time via telematics
  • Dr. Ricardo Rivas, researcher of CEDER assumed the position as editor of the magazine.

This past 22 of January, the editorial committee of POLIS Latin American Magazine made the regular meeting at the start of the year to evaluate and project the functionality of the issue edited by the Centro de Estudios del Desarrollo Regional y Políticas Públicas (CEDER)

Due to the contingency, the members of the committee talked for the first time via telematics. The participants were Gonzalo Delamaza, editor-in-chief of POLIS from U. de Los Lagos; Antonio Elizalde, founder of the magazine; Gabriela Córdova, Jael Goldsmith Weil, and Daniella Gac from U. de Los Lagos; Manuel Gárate, from U. Católica; Nanette Liberona, from U. de Tarapacá; Juan Pablo Paredes and Fernando de la Cuadra from U. Católica del Maule; and Carina Saldivia, assistant editor of the issue from U. de Los Lagos.

The meeting, in addition, officially undertook as magazine editor CEDER reasearched from U. de Los Lagos, Ricardo Rivas, replacing Gabriela Córdova who continues in the Editorial Committee.

Regarding the time which POLIS is, which has already added more than 20 years of trajectory, Rivas explained that “the truth is that POLIS has recognition not only in Chile, but also in other Latin American countries by social science scholars who have published in our journal and also use our articles”.

He added that, along with this, “recognition has been achieved within more competitive fields such as the indexing of academic journals in different indexes of scientific edition and dissemination; that POLIS has this recognition has been thanks to the work done by different people to publish the magazine uninterruptedly during the last 20 years”.

He also stressed that his role in the publication will be to give continuity to the good management that the magazine has had so far.

“Exercising the role of your outgoing editor will not be easy, since there are several projects underway and others to be executed that come from her management. Retaking and inserting myself into networks already built inside and outside the organization is challenging, but I have the help of the previous editor and current assistant editor, who will be fundamental, “he said.

He stressed that “I hope to contribute to a management that has at the base the information generated during these years to make the journal more read, cited and considered for academics to disseminate their work.”

Commitments

On the other hand, with all that this implied, the Editorial Committee of POLIS positively evaluated what was done during 2020, the year in which the magazine renewed its image. At the same time, he projected the work of the magazine within three years.

In this context, Carina Saldivia, assistant editor of POLIS, said that the meeting was “quite fruitful and despite the contingency we were able to meet via telematics practically all of us, around a friendly conversation.”

She said that the meeting thanked and recognized the collaborative work with officials from different areas of the Universidad de Los Lagos, such as Felipe Guajardo of Computer Science who was responsible for renewing the website of the publication and with Diego Arriagada of Corporate Image, who was in charge of renewing the graphics of POLIS. Likewise, Carina Saldivia highlighted the work of the outgoing editor of the magazine, Gabriela Córdova who, she said, “professionalized the tasks regarding scientific editing.”

Along with this, he said that work will continue on the dissemination of the articles of the magazine through social networks.  (https://twitter.com/PolisRevista and https://www.facebook.com/PolisRevista/) and in preparing the long-awaited nomination to the Scopus index.

“Several short-term challenges are coming during 2021 and the commitments of the members of the Committee remain intact, eager to continue contributing to the magazine and continue positioning it at the Latin American level and also at the European level, mainly in Spain and Germany, countries that according to Revues is where they read us the most”, Held.

Upcoming issues

As for the next editions of POLIS, the 58th issue of the magazine was recently published: “What is a Political Constitution in Latin America for?”, edited by Gonzalo Delamaza (Section Ed.) and Claudia Heiss and Yanina Welp (Guest Edition).

Meanwhile, issue 59, “Re-imagining diversity in academia, in times of feminist activism and pandemic”, will be edited by Jael Goldsmith Weil (Section Ed.) and Kelly Bauer (Guest Edition), and will be published in May 2021.

For the upcoming editions, Carina Saldivia expressed that “we already have 7 issues for the next two years (2022 and 2023). Somw topics are about food policy, social policy, teleworking and job insecurity, violent times and racism. These topics are not closed because it all depends of the calls; we hope to publish them in May of this year”.

In the same way, she remarked that “it is also relevant for us and we are very happy to be receiving more articles from women in first authorship; for example, in the articles accepted and published in 2020 in the “Research results” section, we already have gender parity. This is important to us because in that sense, the magazine has a commitment to “level the playing field” and balance its content.”

It should be noted that articles must be submitted, according to the publication instructions available at https://scielo.conicyt.cl/revistas/polis/einstruc.htm, to revistapolis@ulagos.cl indicating the call and its number.
