Inter-American Organization for Higher Education (IOHE) outlines its challenges for 2030

Rector of the Universidad de Los Lagos, Óscar Garrido, who presides this international organization, highlights central aspects of the work: inter-Americanness, innovation and inclusion.

With the full attendance of all the vice presidencies: from Canada, the United States, Central America, the Caribbean, the Southern Cone, Andean Countries, Mexico and Colombia, grouping 350 universities from all over the continent, the Session of the Board of Directors of the Inter-American Organization for Higher Education (IOHE) was held in Mexico, the first in a face-to-face manner following the pandemic.

The IOHE that is chaired by the rector of the Universidad de Los Lagos, Óscar Garrido, had as its main objective to meet in the city of Guanajuato to approve the strategic plan for the period 2023-2030 whose basic principles are based on 3 fundamental pillars such as: inter-Americanness (integrate North American international cooperation, Central America and South America), innovation and inclusion, a plan that was approved unanimously.

“The objective of this period of strategic planning points to a higher level of development and symmetry and a lot of solidarity among institutions in order to guarantee a quality system in the Americas in higher education. Also, the General Assembly was held with the presence of 280 universities of the 350 that are, in hybrid mode, “explains the rector and president of the OUI, Óscar Garrido.

As part of this activity, the Gilles Boulet Prize 2022 was awarded. In the name of the founder of the IOHE who, in a visionary way 42 years ago, managed to generate this network of cooperation that is maintained to this day and that grows and strengthens with the integration of more institutions. The award this year went to an academic from the Dominican Republic for presenting the most innovative project of University Leadership and Management IGLU.

Dr. Luis Felipe Guerrero, Vice President of the IOHE-Mexico region and Rector General of the Universidad de Guanajuato, was in charge of receiving and welcoming the 350 partner institutions from 28 countries that were present at this important session.
